Select Semesters
Whether you're checking your performance for the semester or keeping track of your overall academic score, this Anna University CGPA calculator helps you calculate your GPA or CGPA using your grades and course credits.
Enter your subject grades and credits to calculate your GPA, or add your semester scores to work out your overall CGPA. If you'd rather calculate it yourself or want to understand what your score means, the sections below explain the Anna University grading system, the official calculation formula, degree classification, and CGPA-to-percentage conversion.
What is CGPA at Anna University?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) shows your overall academic performance across the semesters you have completed. At Anna University, CGPA is calculated using the grade points and credits of the applicable courses, so a course with more credits has a greater effect on the final score.
The basic formula is:
| CGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Course Credit) ÷ Σ Course Credits |
For example, if you receive a grade point of 8 in a 4-credit subject, that subject contributes 8 × 4 = 32 credit points to the calculation. The credit points from all applicable courses are then added and divided by the total number of credits.
What is GPA at Anna University?
GPA (Grade Point Average) represents your academic performance for a single semester. It is calculated using the grade points and credits of the courses you have registered for in that semester.
| GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Course Credit) ÷ Σ Course Credits |
You may also see the term SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) used for a semester-wise score. In this context, GPA or SGPA refers to your performance for a particular semester, while CGPA represents your cumulative performance across completed semesters. You can use the Anna University GPA calculator to calculate your semester GPA using your grades and course credits.
Under Anna University's Regulation 2025, GPA is calculated as a credit-weighted average of the grade points earned in the courses registered during the semester. CGPA follows the same method using the applicable courses completed up to the latest semester.
Formula Used to Calculate Anna University CGPA
Anna University uses a credit-weighted formula to calculate both GPA and CGPA. This means the grade point you earn in a subject is multiplied by the credits assigned to that subject.
GPA/CGPA = Σ (Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ Credits
Here:
- Credit is the number of credits assigned to the subject.
- Grade Point is the point assigned to the grade you receive.
- Σ means the total of all the applicable subjects.
For example, if you get a grade point of 9 in a 4-credit subject, that subject contributes 9 × 4 = 36 points to the calculation. The points from all applicable subjects are then added and divided by the total number of credits.
The formula is the same for GPA and CGPA, but the subjects included are different. GPA is calculated using the subjects you take in one semester, while CGPA is calculated using your results across all the semesters you have completed so far. Your CGPA is shown up to two decimal places under Anna University Regulation 2025.
Details of grading system followed at Anna University for regulation 2025 and 2021
Anna University uses different grading systems depending on the regulation applicable to your batch. Both Regulation 2025 and Regulation 2021 use a 10-point scale, but the grade names, grade points and marks ranges differ between the two regulations. If you are using our calculator, select Regulation 2025 or Regulation 2021 based on the regulation you are studying under.
Anna University Regulation 2025 Grading System
Anna University assigns a grade and a corresponding grade point based on the marks you score in a course. For students under Regulation 2025, the grades and grade points are:
| Grade | Description | Grade Point | Marks Range |
| S | Outstanding | 10 | 91-100 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 | 81-90 |
| A | Very Good | 8 | 71-80 |
| B+ | Good | 7 | 66-70 |
| B | Above Average | 6.5 | 61-65 |
| C+ | Average | 6 | 56-60 |
| C | Satisfactory | 5 | 50-55 |
| U | Re-appearance | 0 | Below 50 |
| SA | Shortage of Attendance | 0 | - |
| WC | Withdrawal of Course | 0 | - |
For example, if you score between 81 and 90 marks, you receive an A+ grade, which carries 9 grade points. Similarly, a score between 66 and 70 marks corresponds to a B+ grade and 7 grade points. Anna University follows these absolute grading ranges for R2025. The grade point you receive is then used along with your course credits to calculate your GPA or CGPA.
Anna University Regulation 2021 Grading System
Anna University assigns a grade and a corresponding grade point based on the marks you score in a course. For students under Regulation 2021, the grades and grade points are:
| Grade | Description | Grade Point | Marks Range |
| O | Outstanding | 10 | 91-100 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 | 81-90 |
| A | Very Good | 8 | 71-80 |
| B+ | Good | 7 | 61-70 |
| B | Average | 6 | 56-60 |
| C | Satisfactory | 5 | 50-55 |
| U | Re-appearance | 0 | Below 50 |
| SA | Shortage of Attendance | 0 | |
| W | Withdrawal | 0 |
For example, a score between 81 and 90 marks gives you an A+ grade, which carries 9 grade points. Similarly, a score between 61 and 70 marks gives you a B+ grade and 7 grade points. For Regulation 2021, the grade point earned in each course is combined with the course credits to calculate your GPA or CGPA. Make sure you select the calculator that matches your regulation before entering your grades and credits.
Anna University Degree Classification Based on CGPA
Your CGPA also plays a role in deciding your final degree classification at Anna University. The main CGPA thresholds are 6.50 for First Class and 8.50 for First Class with Distinction. However, your CGPA alone does not decide the classification. Other conditions in the applicable regulation also matter.
For students under Regulation 2025:
- First Class with Distinction: You need a CGPA of 8.50 or above, along with the other requirements mentioned in the regulation.
- First Class: You need a CGPA of 6.50 or above, along with the applicable requirements.
- Second Class: If you qualify for the degree but do not meet the requirements for First Class or First Class with Distinction, you receive Second Class.
For example, if your CGPA is 8.50, you meet the CGPA requirement for First Class with Distinction. But this does not automatically mean you will receive that classification, as other conditions also apply.
The 6.50 and 8.50 CGPA thresholds also apply to Regulation 2021, subject to the conditions specified in that regulation. Your official Anna University academic record will show your final degree classification.
How to Calculate CGPA Manually?
Your scorecard may already show your CGPA, but knowing how it is calculated can help you check your result yourself. The calculation is based on the grade points and credits of your courses, so you cannot simply take the average of all your grades. Let's see how it works with a simple example.
Example: Calculating CGPA for Two Semesters
Suppose a student has completed two semesters with the following results.
Semester 1
| Subject | Grade | Grade Point | Credits |
| Subject 1 | S | 10 | 4 |
| Subject 2 | A+ | 9 | 3 |
| Subject 3 | A | 8 | 3 |
Semester 2
| Subject | Grade | Grade Point | Credits |
| Subject 4 | S | 10 | 3 |
| Subject 5 | A+ | 9 | 4 |
| Subject 6 | B+ | 7 | 3 |
Step 1: Multiply each grade point by its course credits
For Semester 1:
- Subject 1: 10 × 4 = 40
- Subject 2: 9 × 3 = 27
- Subject 3: 8 × 3 = 24
Total grade points = 40 + 27 + 24 = 91
Total credits = 4 + 3 + 3 = 10
For Semester 2:
- Subject 4: 10 × 3 = 30
- Subject 5: 9 × 4 = 36
- Subject 6: 7 × 3 = 21
Total grade points = 30 + 36 + 21 = 87
Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Step 2: Calculate the overall CGPA
Now add the grade points and credits from both semesters:
| CGPA = Total grade points ÷ Total credits |
CGPA = (91 + 87) ÷ (10 + 10)
CGPA = 178 ÷ 20
CGPA = 8.90
So, the student's CGPA after two semesters is 8.90.
This method gives more weight to subjects with more credits. For example, a 4-credit subject affects your CGPA more than a 3-credit subject because its grade point is multiplied by a larger credit value. This credit-weighted method is used for CGPA under Anna University's Regulation 2025. CGPA includes the applicable courses completed up to the latest semester.
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Want to know what your Anna University CGPA means in percentage? For both Regulations 2021 & 2025, you can convert your CGPA to percentage by multiplying it by 10.
| Percentage = CGPA × 10 |
From the above example, your CGPA is 8.90:
Percentage = 8.90 × 10 = 89%
So, a CGPA of 8.90 is equivalent to 89% using the Anna University conversion formula.
If you want to learn more about the calculation, CGPA and its conversion to percentage, you can refer our CGPA to Percentage Calculator.
How to Calculate GPA Manually?
You can also calculate your semester GPA yourself using the grade points and credits for each subject. Just multiply each grade point by its course credits, add the results, and divide by the total number of credits.
| GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Course Credit) ÷ Σ Course Credits |
Example: Calculate GPA for Semester 1
Suppose your Semester 1 results are:
| Subject | Grade | Grade Point | Credits |
| Subject 1 | S | 10 | 3 |
| Subject 2 | A+ | 9 | 2 |
| Subject 3 | A | 8 | 3 |
Now calculate the weighted grade points for each subject:
- Subject 1: 10 × 3 = 30
- Subject 2: 9 × 2 = 18
- Subject 3: 8 × 3 = 24
Add them together:
30 + 18 + 24 = 72
Now add the total credits:
3 + 2 + 3 = 8
So:
GPA = 72 ÷ 8 = 9.00
Therefore, your Semester 1 GPA is 9.00.
This is a credit-weighted calculation, so a subject with more credits has a greater effect on your GPA.
