SGPA to CGPA Conversion Calculator

SGPA and CGPA are the two most commonly used metrics in the Indian academic environment to track and evaluate a student’s performance. If you’re a student or a parent wanting to know A to Z about SGPA to CGPA conversion, this article is for you. In simple terms, SGPA and CGPA are standard metrics used by universities to track your academic performance across all completed semesters.

The above free online calculator converts your SGPA to CGPA accurately. If you’re a Direct Second Year entry student, enter your SGPA from Semester 3. It will calculate your CGPA from the semester you provide.

What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. SGPA is the weighted average of all the subject's grade points earned by a student in a single semester. It is a 10-point scale system with 0.1 increments. SGPA is used by many universities for admissions and scholarships.

SGPA Calculation Formula: SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. CGPA is the measurement of overall academic performance of the students throughout their education tenure in school or college. In simple terms, CGPA simplifies a student’s performance into a single score. It can be calculated by dividing the sum of all grade points obtained by the sum of credit points. CGPA is used by universities for admissions into higher education programmes.

CGPA Calculation Formula: CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Difference Between SGPA and CGPA

Criteria SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
Definition SGPA is the average grade point of a specific semester, calculated based on the grades and credits of all subjects taken during that semester. CGPA is the overall average grade point a student earns across all semesters of a course, calculated by combining the SGPA of each semester.
Purpose Reflects short-term academic performance. Reflects long-term academic achievements.
Time Period Calculated for one semester only. Calculated for an entire academic programme.
Scope Evaluates academic performance of a particular semester. Evaluates overall academic performance throughout the course.
Calculation Average of grade points earned in all subjects in a semester, weighted by credit hours. Weighted mean of SGPA from all semesters or years of study.
Usage Track semester progress Graduation score, higher education
Variability Changes each semester Balances fluctuations over time
Feedback Provides semester-specific feedback Provides cumulative feedback

How to calculate SGPA?

As SGPA reflects on your performance over a period of time like a year or a semester, you must know how to calculate the SGPA from obtained marks. The SGPA is calculated based on the grades and credit points obtained. The steps to calculate SGPA are as follows,

Step 1: Note the individual credit points of all the subjects you appeared in that particular semester.
Step 2: Multiply the grade points obtained in each subject with their corresponding credit points.
Step 3: Now add all the resulting answers
Step 4: Add the credit point and find its total sum.
Step 5: Divide the sum of the grade points obtained by the sum of the credit points.
Step 6: The result obtained will be your SGPA.

For a better understanding, we have given you a sample SGPA calculation.

Let's say, the grades and the credit points of the 4 subjects in a semester are as follows.

Subject Grade Point Credit Points
Subject 1 8 3
Subject 2 9 4
Subject 3 6 3
Subject 4 7 4

Thus the SGPA can be calculated as,

SGPA - (Sum of the grade points * Credit points ) /  (Sum of credit points)

= ((8*3)+ (9*4) + (6*3) + (7*4))/ (3+4+3+4)

= 106/14 = 7.57

SGPA = 7.57

To calculate the percentage from SGPA, multiply SGPA by 10 and subtract it by 7.5.
SGPA to percentage = (SGPA*10)- 7.5

= (7.57*10) - 7.5
= 68.2%

An SGPA to CGPA calculator is a GPA conversion tool, used to convert SGPA to CGPA. This tool is also known as an SGPA to CGPA converter. It helps to measure a student's overall academic performance throughout multiple semesters. This tool simplifies the process of understanding one's overall academic standing across an entire course or programme. Enter the sum of all the SGPAs obtained and the total number of semesters in the SGPA to CGPA calculator to receive the overall CGPA.

SGPA to CGPA Calculator of One Semester

For a single semester, your CGPA is the same as your SGPA, as there are no other semesters to average. Use the formula: CGPA = (SGPA of Sem 1 x Credits in Sem 1/ Total Credits in Sem 1), which leads to the same numerical value as your SGPA.

What SGPA Do You Need in Your Remaining Semesters to Hit a Target CGPA?

Scenario 1 - B.E. Computer Science and Engineering Student(after 3rd Semester), Anna University

A student is in mid-year, completed 60 credits (1 semester = 20 credits) with a CGPA of 7.2 and wants a target CGPA of 8.0 by semester 8. With the credit-weighted formula, SGPA required = (Target CGPA x Total Credits minus Current CGPA x Completed Credits) divided by Remaining Credits. The required SGPA is 8.48 across the remaining 100 credits. If you study consistently with above-average scores, you can achieve your targeted CGPA.

Scenario 2 - B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Student (after 4th Semester), Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU)

With 88 credits and a 6.8 CGPA, a student targets 8.0 over 176 total credits. The required SGPA is 9.2 for the remaining 88 credits. This amounts to a near-perfect score across four-consecutive semesters. The student must either revise the target CGPA or take it as a challenge and achieve it without backlogs.

Scenario 3 - B.Tech Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (after 5th Semester), Savitribai Phule Pune University

A student has 120 credits at 8.3 CGPA and targets 8.7 CGPA across 180 total credits by semester 8. Remaining credits are uneven: 22 credits (Semester 6), 18 credits (Semester 7, an internship-heavy load) and 20 credits (Semester 8). Considering the unequal credits, the required SGPA is 9.5. You should aim higher in the heavier-credit semesters to keep the weighted average on track. Moreover, consider internship as an easy-win, it directly hits your SGPA of Semester 7 and boosts your overall score.

Common Errors to Avoid Using SGPA to CGPA Calculator

● Early Rounding Errors: Rounding numbers too early during the calculation process can lead to noticeable differences in the final CGPA. It is best to use exact values throughout the calculation and round off only at the final step.

● Overlooking Failed Subjects: When calculating SGPA in certain grading systems, failed subjects are also included. If these are ignored while calculating CGPA, it can produce an inflated or incorrect overall score.

● Using the Wrong Credit Scale: Different institutions follow different grading scales, such as a 4-point scale or a 10-point scale. Students must confirm their university’s credit system to ensure accurate CGPA calculations.

● Incorrect Credit Weightage: Using the wrong credit weightage for a semester can lead to an inaccurate CGPA. Students should always multiply their SGPA by the correct number of credits assigned to each semester.

● Not Verifying the Final Calculation: Always double-check your CGPA calculation. Even a small arithmetic mistake can affect the final result and lead to incorrect academic records.

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA?

The weightage of the marks obtained by the students in their academic tenure is expressed using CGPA. The aggregate sum of the SGPA in each semester gives the CGPA.  Calculating CGPA from SGPA follows the following steps,

  • Identify the SGPA for all the semesters. This will be the average score of all the subjects.
  • Add the resulting SGPA for all the semesters.
  • Then find the total number of semesters.
  • To calculate CGPA from SGPA, divide the total SGPA by the number of sessions or semesters.
CGPA = (Sum of all the SGPA) / (total number of semesters)

The calculation can be explained with the help of a sample.

For instance, if the SGPA of a student in 4 semesters is,

  • Semester 1 - 8
  • Semester 2 - 7
  • Semester 3 - 7.9
  • Semester 4 - 6.9

The CGPA calculation will be as

CGPA = (Sum of all the SGPA) / (Total number of semesters)

= (8+7+7.9+6.9) / (4)
CGPA = 7.45
