Mumbai University Grading System
Mumbai University follows a 10-point grading system under its current NEP 2020 programme regulations. Marks obtained in a course are mapped to a letter grade and corresponding grade point, which are then used to calculate the Semester GPA (SGPA) and Programme CGPA.
| Marks Range | Grade | Grade Point | Performance |
| 90-100 | O | 10 | Outstanding |
| 80-90 | A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| 70-80 | A | 8 | Very Good |
| 60-70 | B+ | 7 | Good |
| 55-60 | B | 6 | Above Average |
| 50-55 | C | 5 | Average |
| 40-50 | P | 4 | Pass |
| Below 40 | F | 0 | Fail |
| Absent | Ab | 0 | Absent |
Under this system, 10 is the highest grade point, while a grade point of 4 represents a pass. Grade points are combined with the credits assigned to courses to calculate the SGPA and, cumulatively, the CGPA.
Note: Mumbai University has used different grading structures under earlier academic schemes.
Therefore, students from older CBCS/CBSGS schemes should refer to the grading system applicable to their programme and academic batch rather than assuming that the current NEP 2020 scale applies to their transcript.
How to Calculate the Mumbai University CGPA?
Mumbai University calculates CGPA using a credit-weighted average of grade points across the courses completed in the programme. Your CGPA takes into account the credits and grade points associated with your courses rather than simply averaging your semester GPAs.
Step 1: Find the Grade Points and Credits
For each completed course, note the grade point (G) and the corresponding credit (C). The grade point is determined from the applicable Mumbai University grading system.
Step 2: Multiply Credits by Grade Points
For each course, multiply its credit by the corresponding grade point:
Credit × Grade Point
For example:
C₁ × G₁, C₂ × G₂, C₃ × G₃, ...
Step 3: Add the Credit Points
Add the products obtained for all courses:
Σ(C × G)
Then add the credits of all the courses:
ΣC
Step 4: Apply the CGPA Formula
The Mumbai University CGPA formula is:
CGPA = Σ(C × G) / ΣC
Here, C represents the credit assigned to a course, while G represents the grade point obtained for that course. Mumbai University's regulations define CGPA as the cumulative calculation across the programme using this credit-weighted approach.
Example of Mumbai University CGPA Calculation
Suppose a student has completed three semesters with the following semester GPA and total credits:
| Semester | GPA | Credits |
| Semester 1 | 7.5 | 18 |
| Semester 2 | 8 | 20 |
| Semester 3 | 7 | 16 |
When calculating CGPA from semester-level GPA values, the semester GPAs must be weighted according to their credits:
CGPA = [(7.5 × 18) + (8.0 × 20) + (7.0 × 16)] / (18 + 20 + 16)
= (135 + 160 + 112) / 54
= 407 / 54
= 7.54
Final CGPA = 7.54
Mumbai University CGPA to Percentage Conversion 2026
The Mumbai University CGPA to percentage conversion rules changed in 2026. The University of Mumbai has discontinued the earlier formula-based conversion and repealed the previous CGPA/CGPI conversion circulars. Under the new process, students who need a percentage conversion can request it, and the applicable semester marks are considered for calculating the percentage.
How is Mumbai University CGPA converted to percentage in 2026?
For applicable programmes and batches, the percentage is calculated using the student's actual marks across the relevant semesters, rather than applying a fixed CGPA multiplier. The conversion is handled by the college, and a conversion certificate is issued by the University when specifically requested.
This means there is no single CGPA-to-percentage formula such as 7.1 × CGPA + 11 under the current 2026 conversion process. That formula belonged to an earlier University of Mumbai conversion rule and should not be presented as the current 2026 formula.
Mumbai University SGPA Calculation
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) represents a student's academic performance for a particular semester. It is calculated using the grade points and credits of the courses completed during that semester.
The Mumbai University SGPA formula is:
SGPA = Σ(C × G) / ΣC
Where:
- C = Credits assigned to each course
- G = Grade point obtained in each course
- Σ(C × G) = Total of credit × grade point for all courses in the semester
- ΣC = Total credits for the semester
Example of Mumbai University SGPA Calculation
Suppose a student has completed three courses in a semester:
| Course | Credits | Grade Point |
| Course 1 | 4 | 8 |
| Course 2 | 3 | 9 |
| Course 3 | 3 | 7 |
The SGPA would be:
SGPA = [(4 × 8) + (3 × 9) + (3 × 7)] / (4 + 3 + 3)
= (32 + 27 + 21) / 10
= 80 / 10
= 8.00
Final SGPA = 8.00
Your SGPA is calculated separately for each semester, while CGPA represents cumulative academic performance across the programme.
Difference Between SGPA and CGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance for a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) represents your overall performance across the courses or semesters included in the cumulative calculation.
| SGPA | CGPA |
| Measures performance for one semester | Measures cumulative academic performance |
| Calculated using courses completed in a particular semester | Calculated using courses considered across the programme |
| Can change from one semester to another | Changes as more semesters are added to the cumulative calculation |
| Uses the credits and grade points of that semester | Uses the credits and grade points included in the cumulative calculation |
For example, if your SGPAs are 7.5, 8.0 and 7.0 in three semesters, your CGPA is not necessarily their simple average. When semester credits differ, the CGPA should be calculated using the appropriate credit-weighted calculation. This distinction is important when using a Mumbai University CGPA Calculator, as CGPA reflects cumulative performance rather than the result of a single semester.

FAQs
1. What is the Mumbai University CGPA to percentage conversion formula?
The applicable CGPA-to-percentage conversion depends on the University of Mumbai's rules applicable to your programme, academic scheme and batch. Students should refer to the latest University guidelines rather than automatically applying an older conversion formula.
2. How is CGPA calculated at Mumbai University?
Mumbai University calculates CGPA using a credit-weighted calculation of grade points. The general formula is:
CGPA = Σ(C × G) / ΣC
where C represents credits and G represents the corresponding grade points.
3. Is CGPA the same as SGPA?
No. SGPA measures academic performance for a particular semester, whereas CGPA represents cumulative academic performance across the courses or semesters included in the calculation.
4. How can I calculate my Mumbai University CGPA?
You can use the Mumbai University CGPA Calculator on this page. Select the number of completed semesters, enter the GPA and total credits for each semester, and click Calculate to get your cumulative CGPA.
5. Can I convert my Mumbai University CGPA to percentage?
Yes, you can use the Mumbai University CGPA to Percentage Calculator for an indicative conversion. However, if you need an official percentage for admission, employment or another formal purpose, follow the applicable University/college conversion procedure for your programme and batch.
6. What is the highest CGPA in Mumbai University?
Under the 10-point grading system used in applicable current NEP 2020 programmes, the highest grade point is 10. The grading structure can differ for students from earlier academic schemes.
7. Does Mumbai University CGPA depend on credits?
Yes. Credits are an important part of the CGPA calculation because grade points are weighted according to the credits assigned to the courses. Therefore, CGPA should not automatically be calculated by simply averaging semester GPAs when the credits differ.
