Describe a book you read that changed your perspective on something - Band 8
Introduction:
I have read quite a few books over the years, but one that genuinely changed the way I look at life was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I came across it at a time when I was thinking a lot about the choices people make and whether a different decision could have led to a better life.
What was the book about?
The book is about a woman called Nora who finds herself in a mysterious library between life and death. Every book in the library represents a different version of her life based on the choices she could have made. She gets the opportunity to explore these different lives and see what might have happened if she had taken a different path.
Tip: Briefly explain the main idea of the book. Focus on the part that connects to the change in your perspective rather than giving a complete summary of the story.
Why did you decide to read it?
I decided to read it because I came across several positive reviews online, and the idea of exploring different versions of one person's life immediately caught my attention. I was also curious because I had sometimes wondered how my life might have turned out if I had made different decisions in the past.
Tip: Give a personal reason for choosing the book. You can mention what attracted your attention to it, such as reviews, a recommendation, or your interest in the topic.
What was your perspective before reading it?
Before reading the book, I used to think that making the right decision was extremely important because one wrong choice could have a lasting impact on your future. I sometimes looked back at missed opportunities and wondered whether I would have been happier if I had chosen differently.
Tip: Clearly explain what you believed before reading the book. Connect this point to your own thoughts or experiences to make the answer more personal.
How did the book change your perspective?
The book completely shifted my perspective. It made me realise that there is no such thing as a perfect life, because every choice comes with its own challenges. More importantly, I understood that instead of constantly looking back and thinking about what could have been, it is better to make the most of the life we have.
Tip: Spend more time on this part because it is the main focus of the cue card. Explain what you realised after reading the book and how your way of thinking changed.
Conclusion:
Overall, I would say The Midnight Library left a lasting impression on me. It taught me to stop dwelling on past decisions and focus more on the present, which is a perspective I still try to follow in my everyday life.
Describe a book you read that changed your perspective on something - Band 7
Introduction:
I have read many books, but one book that really made me think differently was The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. I read it when I wanted to learn more about managing money and making better financial decisions.
What was the book about?
The book is mainly about how people think about money and how their habits and experiences affect their financial decisions. It explains that being good with money is not only about earning a lot. It is also about making sensible choices, controlling your spending, and thinking about the future.
Why did you decide to read it?
I decided to read it because I wanted to understand why some people with a good income still struggle financially. I had also started thinking more seriously about saving money, so I felt that this book could give me some useful ideas.
What was your perspective before reading it?
Before reading the book, I thought that earning a high salary was the most important part of becoming financially successful. I also believed that people who earned more would naturally be better at managing their money.
How did the book change your perspective?
After reading it, I realised that earning and managing money are two different things. Someone can earn a lot but spend almost everything, while another person with a smaller income can save regularly and plan for the future. This changed the way I looked at financial success. I started paying more attention to my spending habits and became more interested in long-term financial planning.
Conclusion:
Overall, I found the book quite eye-opening because it made me question some of my old ideas about money. I still remember its main message, and I think it has helped me become more careful about the financial decisions I make.

Describe a Book You Read That Changed Your Perspective on Something - IELTS Speaking Part 3 Follow-up Questions
Here are some common IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions related to reading, books, and how they can influence people's thoughts and lives. The Part 3 discussion lasts around 4-5 minutes, so practise these questions to develop clear and well-supported answers.
1. Why do people read books?
People read books for different reasons. Some read for entertainment, while others want to gain knowledge, improve their skills, or understand different viewpoints. Books can also be a good way to relax after a busy day.
2. Can books change the way people think?
Yes, I think they can. A good book can introduce people to ideas and experiences that they may not have considered before. This can encourage them to see things from a different perspective.
3. What kind of books can have the biggest impact on people?
Books based on real-life experiences or important social issues can have a strong impact because readers can connect them with their own lives. However, it really depends on the person and what they are going through at the time.
4. Do young people read enough books nowadays?
I don't think most young people read as much as they used to. They have many other forms of entertainment, such as social media, streaming platforms, and online games. However, some young people still read regularly, especially when they find a topic they are genuinely interested in.
5. Is reading a better way to learn than watching videos?
I wouldn't say one is always better than the other. Books usually allow people to explore a subject in greater detail, while videos can explain ideas quickly and visually. It depends on the topic and the learner's preference.
6. Can reading fiction be useful for personal development?
Definitely. Fiction allows readers to experience different characters, cultures, and situations through stories. It can help people develop empathy and a broader understanding of other people's experiences.
7. Do people's reading habits change as they get older?
Yes, I think they often do. When people are younger, they may prefer fiction or books for entertainment, while adults may become more interested in topics related to careers, finance, relationships, or personal development.
8. Can one book really change a person's life?
Yes, although it may not happen immediately. Sometimes a book introduces an idea that stays with a person and gradually influences their decisions. The right book at the right time can have a surprisingly strong effect.
9. Do you think people should read books recommended by others?
Recommendations can be useful, but people should choose books based on their own interests as well. A book that has a huge impact on one person may not have the same effect on someone else.
10. Why do some people lose interest in reading?
One reason could be a lack of time. People also have many digital distractions today, so sitting down with a book can be difficult. Another reason is that they may simply not have found a type of book that interests them yet.
