Who You Visited and Where They Lived?

I’d like to talk about a two-day visit I made to my cousin Kavya’s home in Bangalore. Actually, the three of us, Kavya, Karthi and I, are cousins and have been very close since childhood. After I got a job as a Software Developer in Bangalore, I decided to visit Kavya because it had been a long time since the three of us had spent time together.

Tips:

  • Say who you visited and name the place where they lived.
  • Briefly mention your relationship with them and how often you usually meet.

Why You Made This Visit?

I mainly wanted to meet my cousins and spend some time with them after being busy with our own lives. Since we were all in Bangalore, we thought it would be a good opportunity to stay at Kavya’s place for a couple of days. We didn't really have any special plans, we just wanted to relax and enjoy each other's company.

Tip:

  • Explain why you decided to visit that person, at that particular time.

What Happened During This Visit?

One of the funniest things happened on the first day was when Karthi suddenly announced that he was going to bake a cake in a pressure cooker. At first, we were a little doubtful, but he seemed very confident. He prepared the batter really well, and honestly, it looked and smelled so good that all three of us were already drooling while waiting for the cake.

We kept checking on it, expecting to get a perfectly baked cake. But after some time, we realised that something had gone terribly wrong. The cake had burnt, and to make things even worse the bottom of the cooker was completely spoiled. We couldn't stop laughing when we saw the mess. Karthi, however, wasn't laughing anymore because he had to clean it up.

It took him almost two hours to scrub and clean the cooker. Kavya and I kept teasing him while he was doing it, which made the whole situation even funnier. Then, we gave up on the cake and ordered some food instead.

The next day, we went out around Bangalore, had some food and spent the rest of the day together doing street shopping. It was a very relaxed couple of days, and we didn't feel the need to make any elaborate plans.

Tip:

  • Describe an incident that happened during the visit.

What You Enjoyed About This Visit?

What I enjoyed most was that we were together after such a long time, and even a small incident like a burnt cake became a memory that we still laugh about. I think that's what made the visit special. We weren't doing anything big, but we were comfortable enough to be silly, make fun of each other and enjoy the moment.

For me, those two days felt like a small reunion with my childhood. I went there simply to meet my cousins, but I came back with a funny story to share.

Tips:

  • Explain what you enjoyed most about spending time with the family member.
  • Connect your reason to a specific moment or memory from the visit.
  • End by explaining why you still remember the visit.

Who You Visited and Where They Lived?

I’d like to talk about a visit to my family friends in Cousins Beach. My mother, Laurel, was very close to Susannah, so we used to visit her and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah, during almost every school vacation. One visit that I still remember was during my ninth-grade vacation.

Why You Made This Visit?

My mother and I went to stay with Susannah and her sons for a few days. I had known Conrad and Jeremiah since I was very young, so I was always happy to spend time with them during our vacations.

What Happened During This Visit?

One night, our mothers were watching a movie in the living room. After some time, they both fell asleep. The three of us decided to sneak out of the house and go to Cousins Beach without telling them.

We went into the sea and spent some time swimming and playing in the water. It was late at night, so we knew our mothers would be angry if they found out, but we were having too much fun to think about it.

After a while, we went back home. Unfortunately, we were caught as we entered the house. Our mothers were very angry because we had gone swimming at night without telling them. They scolded us and even beat us for doing something so dangerous. We were all crying and felt really bad about what we had done.

What You Enjoyed About This Visit?

Even though we got punished, I still remember that night as one of the most adventurous experiences of my childhood. I had never gone swimming in the sea at night before, and doing it with Conrad and Jer made it even more exciting.

Of course, I understand now why our mothers were so angry, because it really was dangerous. But whenever I think about those vacations at Cousins Beach, the excitement of that midnight swim is something I don't think any of us will ever forget.

Who You Visited and Where They Lived?

I would like to talk about a time when I visited my grandmother in her village on the outskirts of Pondicherry. I was in fifth grade at that time. Her house was a beautiful villa facing the sea. My cousin, my brother and I went there together and stayed with her for about a week.

Why You Made This Visit?

We went there during our school holidays because we wanted to spend some time with our grandmother. She was quite old and had some health problems, so she could not do many things by herself. But she was very happy when she heard that the three of us were going to stay with her for a whole week.

What Happened During This Visit?

Even though she was not very well, she wanted to make us happy and comfortable. She cooked some of our favourite snacks for us. My brother asked her to make fried rice, which she had never made before. Still, she took the effort to learn how to make it, and surprisingly, it turned out to be really tasty.

Every evening, she would take us to the nearby beach, where we would play and spend some time together. Her house also had a small garden, where she kept five rabbits and three hens. We were very excited to play with the rabbits and feed them.

What You Enjoyed About This Visit?

I really enjoyed this visit because we got to spend a whole week with our grandmother and do things that we could not do at home. I especially liked playing with the rabbits and going to the beach every evening.

The house was surrounded by greenery, and we could enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful view of the sea. Also my grandmother's efforts to make us happy also made the visit very special.

Describe a Time When You Enjoyed Visiting a Member of Your Family in Their Home- IELTS Speaking Part 3 Follow-up Questions

1. Do you think families should spend more of their free time together?

Yes, I think so. Nowadays, people spend a lot of time on their phones or are busy with work and studies, so they don't spend much time with their family. Even doing something simple, like watching a movie, going out for dinner or taking a short trip, can bring everyone closer. More importantly, these moments can become good memories that people remember later in life.

2. Do you think parents should help their children with their schoolwork?

Yes, I think they should, especially when children are struggling with a particular subject. Parents can explain things in a simpler way and give them some encouragement. Also, when parents help with schoolwork, they get to know what their children are learning and what they find difficult.

3. Do you think family relationships become less close as children grow older?

Yes, I think this can happen because children become busy with their studies, jobs and their own lives. They may also move to different cities, so they don't get to see their family as often as they did before. But I don't think this has to make families distant. If they make an effort to call each other or meet whenever possible, they can still have a close relationship.

4. How important is it for families to have at least one meal together every day?

I’d say it’s quite important. These days, everyone seems to be busy with work, school or other things, so having at least one meal together gives the family some time to talk. They can share what happened during the day and catch up with each other. It may seem like a small thing, but I think it really helps keep the family close.

5. Do you think family members should share household chores?

Yes, absolutely. I don’t think all the household work should be left to one person. If everyone helps a little, the work gets finished much faster and nobody feels tired or stressed. For example, children can help with simple things like cleaning their room or washing the dishes. I think it also teaches them to be responsible.
