Describe a time you helped a stranger - Band 8

Introduction

One experience that I still remember clearly was helping an elderly man at a busy railway station. He seemed confused about where to go, and because I was familiar with the station, I decided to step in rather than simply walk past him.

When it happened

It happened a few months ago when I was travelling to another city by train. The station was extremely crowded, and everyone seemed to be in a hurry. While I was waiting for my train, I noticed an elderly man standing near the entrance and repeatedly looking at his ticket and the signs around him.

Tip: Set the scene briefly by mentioning when and where the incident happened. A busy or unusual setting can also help you describe the situation naturally.

Who the stranger was

He was an elderly man who looked to be in his late sixties. I didn't know him at all, but he appeared a little anxious because he was carrying a small bag and kept checking his ticket. I approached him and asked if he needed any help. He told me that he was travelling alone and wasn't sure which platform he needed to go to.

Tip: You don't need to invent many details about the stranger. Mention only a few simple things that help explain why he needed assistance.

What you did to help him

I checked his ticket and realised that his train was leaving from a platform on the other side of the station. I showed him the way and walked with him because there were several platforms and a lot of people around. I also helped him carry his bag for a short distance.

When we reached the right platform, I checked the display board with him and made sure that his train was actually listed there. He thanked me several times and said he was worried that he might miss his train. I told him it was no problem and stayed there until he felt comfortable.

Tip: Describe the actual steps you took to help. This gives you more content and makes your answer sound like a real experience rather than a general story.

How you felt after helping them

I felt quite happy and satisfied after helping him. It wasn't a major thing, and it only took me a few minutes, but I felt that I had made a difference to someone's day. I was also glad that I had noticed his problem instead of ignoring him like many other people who were rushing through the station.

The experience reminded me that sometimes even a small act of kindness can be meaningful to another person. It also made me realise that helping someone doesn't always require a lot of time or effort.

Tip: Explain how the experience made you feel and what you learned from it. Ending with a simple personal reflection helps you develop your answer naturally.

Conclusion

Overall, it was a simple experience, but I remember it because I felt good knowing that I had helped someone who was genuinely struggling. Since then, I have tried to be a little more aware of the people around me and offer help when I think someone needs it.

Describe a Time You Helped a Stranger - Band 7

Introduction

A situation that comes to mind happened when I was shopping at a local supermarket. I noticed a woman who seemed to be having trouble carrying several grocery bags, so I offered to help her take them to her car.

When it happened

It happened a few months ago on a weekend. The supermarket was quite crowded, and I had just finished my shopping. As I was walking towards the exit, I noticed a woman standing near the billing area with several heavy bags around her.

Who the stranger was

She was a middle-aged woman whom I had never met before. She had quite a few shopping bags and seemed to be struggling to carry all of them. I wasn't sure if she needed help, so I asked her if she wanted me to carry some of the bags.

She seemed relieved and told me that her car was parked a little far from the entrance. She thanked me and accepted my help.

What you did to help them

I picked up a few of the heavier bags and walked with her towards the parking area. We had to walk for a couple of minutes because the supermarket was quite busy that day. When we reached her car, I helped her put the bags in the boot.

She thanked me again and said that carrying everything by herself would have been difficult. I simply told her that it was no big deal and that I was happy to help.

How you felt after helping them

I felt quite good afterwards because I knew that I had made things a little easier for her. It was only a small favour, and it didn't take much of my time, but she seemed genuinely grateful. I also felt that it was nice to lend a helping hand to someone I didn't even know.

The experience made me realise that we don't always need a big reason to help people. Sometimes, a simple gesture can brighten someone's day.

Conclusion

Overall, it was a very simple experience, but I still remember it because the woman was genuinely thankful. It reminded me that being helpful doesn't require much effort, and I would be happy to do the same if I came across a similar situation again.

Describe a Time You Helped a Stranger - Band 6

Introduction

I remember a time when I helped a young man who had lost his wallet while travelling on a city bus. He looked worried and was checking his pockets again and again, so I decided to ask him what had happened.

When it happened

It happened about a year ago when I was travelling home by bus after work. The bus was quite crowded, and I noticed the man standing near the door and looking very nervous. He told me that he had just realised that his wallet was missing.

Who the stranger was

He was a young man who looked around my age. I had never seen him before, and he was travelling to a nearby area. He was worried because his wallet had his money and some important cards in it.

I asked him when he had last seen it. He said he had used it when he got on the bus, so he thought he might have dropped it somewhere.

What you did to help them

I helped him check the seat where he had been sitting and the area around it. We looked under the seat and checked the floor, but we couldn't find anything. Then I suggested that he check with the bus conductor because someone might have handed the wallet to him.

Luckily, the conductor had found a wallet a few minutes earlier. The man checked it and realised that it was his. He looked very relieved and thanked me for helping him sort out the problem.

How you felt after helping them

I felt happy because I could help someone out when he was worried. It was not a very difficult thing to do, but I was glad that I didn't simply ignore him. He thanked me several times, which made me feel good. I also realised that a small amount of help can be useful when someone is in a difficult situation.

Conclusion

Overall, it was a simple experience, but I still remember it because the stranger was really relieved after finding his wallet. It made me feel good to know that I had been able to lend a hand when he needed it.

Describe a Time You Helped a Stranger - IELTS Speaking Part 3 Follow-up Questions

These Part 3 questions explore helping others, kindness, responsibility, and people's attitudes towards strangers. The discussion lasts around 4–5 minutes, so practise giving a direct answer with a brief reason or example.

1. Why do people help strangers?

I think people help strangers when they see someone who genuinely needs assistance. Some people are naturally kind, while others help because they believe they should lend a helping hand when they can.

2. Do people help strangers more now than in the past?

I don't think there is a big difference. People still help others, but in busy cities, they may be too focused on their own lives to notice when someone needs help.

3. Should parents teach children to help others?

Yes, definitely. Parents can teach children through simple things like sharing, helping elderly people, or supporting someone who is struggling. This can make children more aware of the people around them.

4. Is it always safe to help a stranger?

No, not always. If the situation seems dangerous, people should ask the police or security staff for help instead of putting themselves at risk.

5. Do people expect something in return when they help others?

Some people might, but I think genuine help should not always come with expectations. It feels more meaningful when you help someone simply because you want to make a difference.

6. Can helping a stranger change someone's day?

Yes, definitely. Even a small favour can make someone feel supported, especially when they are having a difficult day. A small act of kindness can sometimes have a bigger impact than we expect.
